“Better to remain silent and give the impression of being stupid than to speak and remove all doubt!” This aphorism coined by Abraham Lincoln, one of the great American presidents, aptly defines the missed opportunity by the left that rejected and mocked the abolition of the car tax decided by the Meloni government.
There are those – the left-wing governors – who announce appeals to the Constitutional Court for financial damage even though they know that the State will compensate the Regions for the lost revenue (2.3 billion); there are those who downplay it by reducing the cut to an “electoral handout” despite Giorgia Meloni having announced that the measure will be made permanent in the Finance Act; there are those who cling to 2016 statements by the premier who called Matteo Renzi a “pots and pans seller” when he proposed a similar measure (“memory is the intelligence of fools,” Albert Einstein once said); an important magistrate even went so far as to say that “this helps the mafiosi” who, to avoid drawing attention, use small-engine cars, which is a bit like saying: let’s put taxes back on the primary home because criminals have them too. Well, to all these geniuses of politics, justice, and communication we say: make a conscientious objection and pay your car tax but don’t bother the Italians who will save quite a bit and who, regardless of their political beliefs, are simply happy about this.
