“I am happy to be here in Oslo, we want to continue the work to expand our cooperation. For us, Norway is a key partner in Europe, it is our fourth gas supplier and has enormous potential. We are working to extend cooperation to other sectors: from advanced technologies to critical materials, space, and the underwater dimension”: the prime minister Giorgia Meloni said this in statements to the press with the Norwegian prime minister, Jonas Gahr Store, at the Government Guest House in Oslo.
Speaking about the ongoing conflicts, the prime minister added: “We discussed the geopolitical scenario, starting from cooperation in Africa and the Arctic. We are two nations that see the chessboard as a whole. We must not focus only on one border. Italy and Norway will work to support a negotiating perspective in Ukraine for a lasting and just peace.” Meloni also expressed appreciation for the idea of an envoy for the war in Ukraine: “I have already proposed it, I think that identifying and formalizing who speaks on behalf of Europe would be an element that would strengthen the European Union. Nations like Great Britain and Norway should obviously not be excluded. Having a single interlocutor would be an element that would give strength to the European Union. There is a risk of weakening rather than strengthening the position.”

On Vladimir Putin instead: “I think it is clear to everyone the multiplication of provocations by Russia, in recent weeks we have seen several. We must ask why. The provocations from Moscow are multiplying because Putin needs to shift attention by seeking an escalation with Europe from a situation on the war front that is not going as Putin had promised. We must ask ourselves who benefits from an escalation and act accordingly, we must not react to provocations, it would benefit Russia more than Europe.”
Later, a reference to Schlein‘s letter on the possibility of cooperation on energy and climate: “I have no prejudices when sensible proposals are made, but from the first reading of the proposals by the PD secretary Schlein on energy there is an implicit recognition of the good done so far.” Instead, on what Ursula von der Leyen said in the State of the Union speech about greater cooperation on security with countries like Canada and Norway: “I am not able to judge the Security Council. The only thing to avoid is doubling things, I need to understand what is different in von der Leyen’s proposal compared to NATO’s Article 4. I think it is very, very important to make cooperation increasingly strong. I cannot precisely judge the proposals presented by Ursula von der Leyen because I do not know them in detail. But I believe that serious and reliable partners who can help us towards strategic autonomy must be involved.”
