Despite the proclamations of various leaders and the street demonstrations to show unity, the broad front remains a muddle of conflicting ideas and different positions on many key issues (foreign policy above all). To beat Giorgia Meloni and the center-right coalition in the next general elections, however, the left will have to, one way or another, put aside internal differences and appear credible in the eyes of its voters. And something, in this regard, seems to be moving.

Corriere della Sera reports that the center-left, first of all, has set itself the goal of intensifying common parliamentary battles. Then, as Elly Schlein says, the aim is to expand the coalition and in this regard, yesterday, in the Senate, resolutions on differentiated autonomy were presented, also signed by Italia viva. The same will happen soon in the Chamber.

However, many issues remain to be resolved. First and foremost, that of leadership. Dario Franceschini is pushing for Schlein and Conte to meet face to face before the summer break, to clarify who will be the leader of the coalition and other matters. In a one-hour meeting held yesterday – Thursday, July 16 – at Montecitorio, the Democratic Party senator spoke about this with the M5S leader. The conversation between the two, revealed by Huffington Post, was said to have served Franceschini to understand Conte’s real intentions regarding the primaries and the expansion to Renzi, who according to the Democratic senator cannot remain outside the coalition.
The meeting was reportedly organized by the PD parliamentarians themselves, in an attempt to understand what margins there are to fix the rift between Elly Schlein and the M5S leader. “Dario, these two argue constantly, you don’t see a day,” a group of Democratic elected officials reportedly told the senator. And again: “If they continue like this, it will end here as in 2022, something must be done.” In short, optimism does not seem to be the prevailing feeling among the center-left benches. Now, to put the situation back on track, it places all its hopes in the hands of Franceschini and his ability to act as a peacemaker.
