For now, it is a hypothesis (the final vote in the Chamber would still be by secret ballot, so very risky), it will be seen between September and October. A senator of Fratelli d’Italia, belonging to the half of the party that has no sympathies for the general, puts it this way: “We will understand from how it ends with the electoral law. If it passes, we will have a proportional system with a majority bonus that kicks in at 42%. In that case, the coalition will present itself without Vannacci. But if the electoral law reform for some reason does not happen, we will vote with the current law, which assigns victory to whoever wins the most single-member districts. If that is the case, we cannot afford not to make an agreement with him.”
Not everyone inside Fdi thinks this way. Many, like undersecretary Giovanbattista Fazzolari, consider support for Ukraine a decisive variable, sufficient to consider the pro-Russian Vannacci incompatible with the party’s and coalition’s Atlanticist and pro-Kiev line.
