You see those faces under thirty and you get emotional. Because you think of the time when the right had to be careful about putting up posters, going back home, breathing. Last night in Rome, Fenix, the annual festival of National Youth, in a challenging debate in itself, on the history of anti-communism and anti-fascist violence. All interlocutors were very authoritative like Franco Cardini, Giampiero Mughini, Marco Perissa, and Gennaro Sangiuliano. Moderated by Matteo Malacrida.

Those boys in front of the stage dedicated not coincidentally to the “Time of Courage” did not live through those terrible years, when people shouted and practiced – that “killing a fascist is not a crime.” Today, however, that hatred seems to be returning, the “fault” lies in the presence of Giorgia Meloni at Palazzo Chigi: the left, more or less extreme, is unleashed. It was precisely in the name of militant anti-fascism that many, too many young MSI members were murdered. And frankly, I can’t declare myself anti-fascist these days, when every day they ask you for a special membership card.

It’s not a desire for restoration, we love democracy more than those guys and not dictatorship. But we do not forget the blood spilled between the seventies and eighties. In my memory, I still see the flames of my house burning to exterminate my family; then those of my mother’s car; and again the bullets that whistled past me on via Acca Larentia, the year after the massacre without culprits… It was our crazy life. Then, in the institutions, where those who have lived similar paths must serve in a disenchanted way, never forgetting where we come from, those MSI sections remain a scent on the skin.
In those years, fear was felt more by our families than by us. An ancient, historic leader of MSI and AN like Donato Lamorte said we were children of recklessness. They were years of unconscious heroism, but MSI was everything. For the anti-fascists of that troubled history, however, it was too much. In the institutions, certainly, there was – and who knows if there still is – a relationship with opponents that suffered because the hatred of the enemy was felt on oneself. Our youth never marched in demonstrations burning effigies with the image of the opponent, now it is the red rule. That’s why when I hear talk of anti-fascism I would like to tell General Vannacci that I do not feel like embracing that call not only because it is ahistorical, not because one does not ask if we are Anti-Napoleon or anti-Ancient Romans. I am not – and I would say we are not – precisely because of the many fallen we have saluted in their coffins. Right by style and culture, not by fashion and propaganda. The title of last night’s debate, “the forbidden history,” was spot on, telling what has been denied for decades, the asymmetry of memory. The alibi is that there was fascism in Italy. But no one tried to restore it.

The post-communists say, those with tears for the PCI: “We were Italian communists, not Russians.” The Red Brigades were Italian communists, not Russians. And with them, you fought over who was more worthy of the ideology. Anti-fascism has become state ideology; anti-communism remains suspect. It is not about “revisionism,” but about asking for the same measure: foibe, gulags, Pol Pot’s Cambodia, thousands of victims of the Red Brigades and Prima Linea cannot remain a footnote. The writings these days on the Fenix banners (“time of the P38,” hammer and sickle, Pol Pot) prove it alone: those who attack still use the repertoire of the Years of Lead.
