The political map of fandom: Milan on the right, Naples 5Stars | Libero Quotidiano.it

On social media, the debate started instantly: “I wonder why the ‘pulcinella’ vote for the 5Stars.” Where the “pulcinella,” of course, are the Napoli fans. Among the comments, then, one from a Lazio supporter appears: “Neapolitans and Romanisti on the left: I had no doubt.” What heated up the web – both politically and football-wise – was a survey published on the Bidimedia portal, a reference point for those looking for polls on Italians’ voting intentions, regarding political orientation by football teams.

Premise one: the analysis considers supporters of what are currently considered the five top Italian clubs. Namely Inter, Napoli, Roma, Juventus, and Milan. In order of ranking for the 2025-2026 season. The survey, therefore, excludes Como, Atalanta, Bologna, and Lazio (always referring to the last championship). Premise number two: at least until the mid-nineties, things were roughly like this. The curves, and not only, of Milan and Roma on the left, those of Inter and Juventus on the right, Napoli more or less neutral. The curiosity, then, is legitimate regarding what today’s fans choose in the voting booth. And here the Bidimedia survey fits perfectly, which ahead of the very long electoral campaign for the General Elections offers the coalitions an additional map to guide them in the hunt for consensus.

THE CONFIRMATIONS

Let’s start with certainties: Inter and Juventus fans remain mostly on the right. The majority of the black and blue supporters vote for Brothers of Italy (15%). It is true that immediately after there is the PD – 14% -, but the third step on the podium of preferences is jointly occupied by National Future and the League (8%). As for Juventus fans, for 17% of them their heart beats for Giorgia Meloni’s party, then there are the Democrats (14%) and finally Forza Italia (9%). Where there has been a change of trend is in the Milan camp. From the Rossoneri Brigades, there has been a boom in preferences for Brothers of Italy: 21%. The PD, at 10%, is far behind. And in any case, after follow the League (7%), Forza Italia and National Future (6%). A change of course that can probably be traced back to the influence of the long and successful presidency of Silvio Berlusconi, founder of today’s center-right.

Looking more closely at the data, also considering the political orientation of Roma fans, there has been a change. If until the nineties the prevalence of the left was quite well known – thanks to the Cucs and the Fedayn -, things gradually changed with the appearance of factions close to the right. So it is not surprising that today, after the PD which still remains the majority choice – 19% – there is Brothers of Italy (18%) just behind. More distant are M5S (6%) and Roberto Vannacci’s National Future (5%).

Closing with Napoli fans. The curve, as mentioned, has never been characterized by a significant political presence. The glue, if anything, has always been the geographical side, linked to identity and southern claims. And today’s “political” picture cannot help but be influenced by recent experiences, such as the distribution of the citizenship income branded by the Five Star Movement which mainly benefited the South.

THE WEIGHT OF THE SUBSIDY

The preferences of the Azzurri supporters, in fact, primarily go to the PD (15%), subordinately both to Brothers of Italy and the Five Star Movement (14%, more than double compared to other areas). Hence the jokes on social media like this: “Is it a coincidence that the M5S has a peak among fans who mostly live in areas where there was a greater distribution of the citizenship income?” Curiosity: among the five fan bases examined, the one where the component that considers itself “center” is strongest is precisely the Neapolitan one (8%). An inheritance, who knows, of the old Christian Democratic White Whale.
