Today is the last working day in Parliament. The broad front is breaking camp and going on vacation without having made any concrete steps towards consolidating the alliance, now more fragile than when the attempt at a common adventure began. Five months have passed since the left-wing victory in the justice referendum and there is not a single line of the program nor is it clear who the leader will be or at least how they will be identified, if there will be primaries and, if so, when and under what rules.

“It is not the time for divisions, let’s focus on criticizing the Meloni government,” says Elly Schlein to dodge the offensive that Giuseppe Conte is bringing against her. But his words are the real tombstone on the broad front. Perhaps Schlein and Conte hoped that over time Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump, Volodymyr Zelensky or even the EU would solve the Ukrainian quagmire, lifting them from the embarrassment of choice, but it is now clear that it will not be so and it is equally evident that Kyiv is a pretext not to agree. Supporting Ukraine costs one euro per month to every Italian, less than super bonuses and citizenship income, to be clear. Stubbornness on the Russian front is just a way to mask reality: there is one seat for two and not only does no one want to step aside but the only thing Elly and Giuseppi agree on is not converging on a third figure as a common candidate for Palazzo Chigi.

This way there is no way out and so maybe the solution can come from an example of the past. At the beginning of 2022, despite having had over a year to reach an agreement, Parliament could not agree on finding a worthy replacement at the Quirinale for Sergio Mattarella, who had already prepared to move for a peaceful retirement in his Palermo. At the eighth vote almost everyone asked the president to stay at the Colle and get him out of trouble. They did not make a great impression but solved the problem.
If today, Schlein after three and a half years of secretaryship and Conte after five years of presidency still have not found the right formula on program and leadership, no big deal. Governing Italy is not simple and requires clarity of intent, unity and determination at least at the start.

If the two have found neither the formula nor the necessary elements to compose it, they should not rush to solve in a couple of months what they have not managed to do in over a thousand days.
They should take more time, all the time they need. Do as Parliament did with Mattarella. Ask Meloni for a small extension, to postpone the vote and stay at Palazzo Chigi until they agree. After all, from now until 2029, when the new president of the Republic will have to be elected, a seat that the left does not want to give up for anything in the world, there is time.

CONSTITUTION
It would not even be unconstitutional, and not only because mayors and governors have more than once extended their electoral mandate by a few months with some excuse. The Charter indeed provides in article 60 that, in case of war, a law can postpone the polls. Here the wars are two, one in Ukraine and the other within the broad front. The point is whether Giorgia would grant it, trusting that the strange couple would not manage to reach an agreement even in overtime.
