Nick Kyrgios ends up at the center of a doping case after testing positive for cocaine in a test conducted in Mallorca last June 22. A story that takes on particular weight for the Australian, who in recent months had been among the main accusers of Jannik Sinner for the suspension of the South Tyrolean. It was Kyrgios himself who made the news public with a long message on Instagram, in which he took full responsibility for what happened and apologized to fans, family, sponsors, and especially to the young people who follow him.
“I wanted you to hear it from me first. Recently I tested positive for cocaine in a drug test in Mallorca. I made a very serious mistake and I take full responsibility,” wrote the Canberra tennis player. Then the apologies: “I apologize to my fans, my family, my sponsor, and all the people close to me. Above all, I apologize to the kids who follow me.” Kyrgios then recounted the difficult time he has gone through in recent years, between injuries and problems related to the possibility of being close to the end of his career: “I am aware of the example this behavior sets and I am deeply disappointed in myself. I don’t want to make excuses, but I want to explain the situation I found myself in.”
In the message he added: “The injuries of the last two years have weighed heavily on me, both physically and mentally. My body couldn’t do what my mind expected, and accepting that I am now close to the end of my career was harder than I ever imagined.” After the admission, the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s measure also arrived. The Itia officially suspended Kyrgios provisionally from August 4, 2026, indefinitely. The former world number 13 can appeal, but so far he has not initiated any appeal procedure.
