A half-liter bottle of still water at 8 euros. This is the price that surprised Davide, an Italian tourist on vacation in Nice, after having breakfast in a bar in the center of the French city. The total bill was 25.50 euros and also included a cappuccino for 6 euros, an American coffee for 4.50 euros, and a small plain omelette for 7 euros.

What struck the tourist most was the cost of the water, even higher than that of the dish ordered by his mother. “The absurd thing is that my mother sat down to eat an omelette for breakfast, thinking the price was lower than that of other bars. In the end, it turned out that the water cost even more than the omelette,” Davide recounts.

The family had chosen the place thinking it was a normal bar, without any particular luxury features or a panoramic sea view. The price of the omelette was displayed outside, while the beverage prices had not been checked before ordering. “We didn’t worry about looking at the price of the water and coffees. We ordered them directly, trusting the context,” explains the tourist.

After receiving the receipt, the family checked the menu again, discovering that the price was indeed indicated: “We went back to check and at the bottom of the menu, in the ‘mineral waters’ section, it said 50 cl – 8 euros. The coffees were also indicated.” While acknowledging that the prices were displayed, Davide considers the amount surprising for a place of that kind. “You were entering a completely normal bar, not a starred restaurant…”, he concludes, describing himself as “incredulous” especially about the cost of the water.
