The day after the opposition’s criticism for her absence at the summit in Montenegro, Giorgia Meloni responded harshly to Corriere della Sera. “I gladly leave the controversy over alleged isolation to a desperate left, as for those who hint at political reasons for my absence, I remind you that when I have something to say, I say it. I gladly leave childish or Morettian attitudes like ‘I’m noticed more if I come or if I don’t come’ to others,” declared the Prime Minister.

Meloni explained that the choice not to leave was purely logistical: the ceremony for the Carabinieri stamp in Reggio Calabria lasted longer than expected, and it didn’t seem appropriate to fly to Montenegro just to stay “a maximum of one hour.” The Prime Minister emphasized that she is among the leaders most present at international summits and finds the controversies that only erupt around her “ridiculous.” She added that, if she had political reasons to skip a summit, she certainly wouldn’t have chosen the one on the Balkans, given that Italy is among the main supporters of the region’s European integration.
Meloni, however, informed Montenegrin Prime Minister Milojko Spajic and committed to a bilateral meeting soon. Her absence is mainly interpreted in relation to the “Willing” table on Ukraine and peace (today in London with Macron, Starmer, Merz, and Zelensky). The Italian government maintains a position of “observation and support,” considers Ukraine’s entry into the EU premature, and is working towards a rapprochement with the United States.
