There is a sense of resentment on the left and indeed Eugenio Giani, the Democratic president of the Tuscany Region, attacks Giorgia Meloni’s choice to remove the car and motorcycle tax. A measure concerning a regional tax capable of guaranteeing resources of about 7 billion in total. And the Tuscan governor does not spare criticism of the prime minister: “We are in the middle of an election campaign, demagogy is reaching exaggerated levels.”
Giani, interviewed by Fatto Quotidiano, shows his full disagreement: “If Giorgia Meloni wants to take a tax measure consistent with herself, she should do what she has said for years: abolish excise duties on fuel. She promised it while in opposition, without ever following through on her words.” The issue, for the governor, is especially the compensations announced by the government: “I learned about this from a news agency note. Then I will try to understand. But anyway, the numbers don’t add up.” The president of Tuscany then goes into details: “Article 3 of the decree talks about a reimbursement to the Regions of 2 billion and 200 million. In a country with 20 Regions, this means reimbursing at most 100 million.”

For Tuscany, he explains, the bill would be even heavier: “On one hand, the possibility of obtaining resources for 350 million is removed, on the other, 100 million are reimbursed. The thing is scandalous.” Giani also contests the principle behind the intervention. “The main tax of the regions is precisely the car tax. Meloni acted with extreme superficiality: she plays an electoral measure where she cuts taxes, but she does it – guess what – not with State taxes, but with Regional ones.” On the health front, the governor recalls the Regions’ request to bring resources for the National Health System to 7-8% of GDP, against the current 5%. He also cites Minister Schillaci: “The Regions need 5 billion.” For Giani, instead, the government risks subtracting 3 billion by promising compensations yet to be defined. Finally, the constitutional doubt: “I believe it is unconstitutional because there is guaranteed tax autonomy.” And on the prime minister’s consensus, he concludes: “No. Italians look at consistency.” And for consistency, to date, Brothers of Italy is still the leading party.
