The political debate heats up following the decision made yesterday, September 16, by the Council of Ministers to abolish the car tax starting from 2027, a measure that will affect 14.5 million vehicles throughout Italy. The controversy was sparked by Matteo Renzi. With a post published on Facebook, the former Prime Minister first acknowledged that “eliminating the tax for certain categories of cars and mopeds is a good idea. Lowering taxes is always a good idea.”

Then he went on the attack. Referring to a 2016 post in which Giorgia Meloni accused him of being a cookware salesman, precisely following one of his announcements regarding the abolition of the car tax, the former premier wrote: “This is Giorgia Meloni. A leader who attacks opponents and then copies them: on drilling, on the Italicum, on everything. I am different and I say to Meloni: really remove the tax, not just pretend! But I also remind you of this tweet to ask if sometimes you feel even a little ashamed,” Renzi wrote.
The premier’s reply was not long in coming: “Well done Matteo, today you discovered the difference between announcing and delivering.” A difference far from negligible, considering that Renzi had limited himself to announcing the abolition of the tax, while the Meloni government has actually canceled it.
