When it comes back to internal issues, Meloni seems to show some bitterness: “I chose to do politics on the right, I am more than used to criticism. But I do not ignore them, because they can push you to improve. Certainly, in these years I have been accused of everything, even of having blood-stained hands and being responsible for the death of an unvaccinated child. I believe these are accusations that mainly qualify those who make them. And, in any case, I have broad shoulders. What hurt me, instead, was seeing the people who love me attacked or insulted just to hit me.”
“If there is one criticism that made me reflect,” the premier recounts, “it is when I was told: ‘You see, now that you are at Palazzo Chigi you realize how difficult it is to govern the Nation.’ It is very true because, as I said, there have been days when it seemed to me I was swimming in glue. There are thousands of obstacles that you do not see from outside, which make everything seem much easier than it really is.”
There is also room for a sort of political testament, decidedly premature: “Italy today is more reliable and attractive because it is finally a stable and credible nation. And this has also been possible thanks to a strategy carried out over the years by a compact political majority. And if tomorrow Italians decide to give their trust to someone else, I hope it will be someone who will not squander this precious legacy. Because we root for Italy, always and in any case.”
