The Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, opens up in an interview with il Giornale and addresses the main current issues, alternating between foreign policy and internal scenarios in a period when there are no summer holidays.

On the possibility of his rise to the Quirinale, Tajani reiterates: “I am fine where I am. Long live Mattarella!”. A wish that is evidently not long-lasting, because he then adds: “I hope for a center-right president. Finally!”.

On the immigration front, Tajani identifies the policy of the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez as the main cause of the pressure on Ceuta: “You cannot legalize 500,000 immigrants out of a million applications. You create expectations. And you destabilize the whole of Europe.” The minister also comments on the role of the United States. About Donald Trump he observes: “Sometimes he is a bit optimistic. He is not a politician, he uses a particular language.” He then reiterates the need to strengthen European defense: “I will fight so that the Safe funds are spent. They will be less than 15 billion. We will decide at the end of the year.” And he adds: “If we outsource our defense and that of Europe to the Americans, then we have to do what the Americans say. If we want to be freer we have to spend more on defense.” On Ukraine the position remains clear: “If you want peace you have to support Kiev. If you don’t stop them, the Russians will soon invade other countries. Ukraine is the advanced frontier of Europe,” Tajani concludes.
