In Roccavione, a small village of 2,500 souls nestled between the Gesso and Vermenagna Valleys, the world really goes upside down. Ten kilometers from Cuneo, in fact, it happens that the devil and holy water come to an agreement. And so, to govern the small Piedmontese municipality, the PD and Futuro Nazionale find themselves in the same boat. Or rather: in the same majority. In short: reality surpasses fantasy. At least in Roccavione. There, Paolo Giraudo, 44 years old, has been mayor since June 2024. He won with a civic list, without party symbols. At the time he was in Forza Italia. He left it in January to join Fratelli d’Italia. And at the beginning of August the historic turning point: he leaves with the Vannacciani.

And now he is the first mayor of the Granda province to be registered with Fn. And so far everything is normal, especially for us Italians, used to political transformation since the times of Giolitti. The point, however, is that in the majority supporting Giraudo there is also Matteo Giordano, a young PD representative and since January 2025 secretary of the newly born Dem Circle “Borgo e Valli”. Quite a mess. However, it also happens that, in Roccavione, no one is surprised. And even the majority shows no cracks. To the point that the same Giraudo is surprised by so much attention from the national media. “Mine was and remains a civic list, made up of people who care about the future of the town and the well-being of its inhabitants,” he is keen to emphasize. “In forming it and in the daily management of the Municipality no one has been or is conditioned by ideologies and political affiliations.
What some see as a contradiction, such as the presence in the administration of a PD councilor, is just one of its confirmations.” “Perhaps,” he adds, “in a world where everything is a good excuse to create controversy, it is not acceptable that two or more people with different political beliefs get along and work together for the town.” “I joined Futuro Nazionale and I am proud of it,” he stresses, “but in Roccavione I remain the mayor of my citizens and I accept without problems being judged on the results we achieve as an administration, thanks to the commitment of my team.” And poor Giordano? The provincial PD defends him. The coordinator, Davide Sannazzaro, in fact feels no embarrassment. “The PD secretary of Borgo e Valli was elected in June 2024 as a councilor of Roccavione on a civic list, on a town program,” he points out. Also because, he explains, at the time “Futuro Nazionale did not even exist.” And then “it was not Giordano who moved,” but the mayor who “crossed three political forces.” For Sannazzaro, therefore, it is he “who must explain the consistency of the choices.” Then of course, “in terms of values, the distance between PD and Futuro Nazionale is total. But because we do not move for convenience, we do not ask an administrator to abandon the commitments made the day those above him change” party for the third time. In short: Giordano is untouchable. Meanwhile, the Vannacciani are heating up. On September 27 and 28, Fn could indeed run to win the parliamentary seat left vacant by the Forza Italia member Francesco Cannizzaro, elected mayor of Reggio Calabria in June. The deadline for candidacies is August 24 and for Vannacci and his group the Calabrian by-elections could be the first real important electoral test.
