In Paris, however, after the bronze in the longest distance, the swimmer found his smile again and also reopened the discussion about the future. The medal in fact brought back to the center an issue that has accompanied Ceccon for some time: whether to continue competing in both distances or to focus on just one. “As the guys in the pigeon loft used to say, you have to draw a line between 50 and 200 and understand which one to do.” A choice that sooner or later could become necessary, also because of the difference in preparation required by the two races: “Choices will have to be made sooner or later, maybe I will continue to do everything.”

Meanwhile, the 200 backstroke gave him an important answer after a complicated eve. In the semifinal Ceccon had even risked missing the final, qualifying with the last useful time. Then the turning point: 1’53″96 and European bronze, but above all a new Italian record, lowering the previous best by one second and 75 hundredths. “I was not worth the qualifying time, now I am worth 1’53″9 which is two seconds from the world record and in two years you can think about getting closer to it.” A result even more significant considering the troubled relationship with this specialty. “I hate the 200 backstroke, but the race went well.”
Behind the podium, however, there are months of work and effort: “Mentally I am still a bit weak before the race — he continues — My eyes get teary, I suffered a lot in training this year, many more kilometers, different work, there were more times when I didn’t feel like it and I was tired… finally you can see some results.” And so the tomato can wait. Also because, despite everything, Ceccon is still there: “It means you are still there and you are doing well.”
