To draft the government program that yesterday he submitted to the judgment of the Five Star Movement people with a sham referendum, Giuseppe Conte must have been inspired by one of Benito Mussolini’s maxims: «Democratic regimes can be defined as those in which, from time to time, the people are given the illusion of being sovereign».

And this could also explain the eagerness with which the Five Star leader demands the primaries to choose the prime minister candidate for the entire left, well aware that it is an illusion: he, Conte, is betting on the fact that based on complicated internal logics of that world he has good chances of coming out a winner but already knows that if this happened it would indeed soothe his anxiety to return to Palazzo Chigi, not the problem of giving the left a recognized, respected, and authoritative leader.
He cannot be one for the simple reason that he is not left-wing; it could not happen because there is no form of human aggregation in which a very minor partner (as he is in the Broad Field) becomes CEO and decides for everyone. This does not entirely exclude that it could happen against logic and nature because Conte is like the bumblebee which according to all aeronautical technical parameters should not be able to fly due to the shape and weight of its body compared to the wing surface. But since the bumblebee does not know this, it actually flies.

Until someone in the Pd puts the bumblebee Conte face to face with the simple laws of political physics, he will continue undeterred to fly towards Chigi even if the numbers of his party would at most allow him a seat in Montecitorio, which is indeed only a few meters away but is a whole different story.
