Pd, De Pascale goes big: "Abolish the car tax? Unfair measure" | Libero Quotidiano.it

“It is the kickoff of the election campaign. But Italians will not be bought”: Michele De Pascale, governor of Emilia Romagna, said this regarding the Meloni government’s decision to suspend the car tax. Beyond the alleged political reasons behind the measure, according to him there are still two huge limits: “The first is that in my opinion every euro of tax reduction should be focused on those living in economic hardship. And removing the tax on scooters means doing it also for those who can easily afford to pay it. My family, for example, will not pay it when they could have: that money could have reduced the tax burden on those who cannot make ends meet,” he said in an interview with Repubblica.

De Pascale also gave an example: “To put it even better: part of the benefit will save 300 euros for families who needed it, and for them it is a good measure, but it creates inequality, because it penalizes large families with more children who can only have one big car. Maybe you have a family with an old car because they cannot afford to change it who will continue to pay, and another who bought a brand new and fully equipped one who will not pay because it is under 80 kW.” The second limit he identified would then be “worse than the first, because it is a debt-financed measure, since the remaining Pnrr funds are essentially debt. And every time Italians have had a debt-financed tax reduction, in the end they found themselves paying more than the reduction was.”

Car tax, do you like the tax? Just pay it

“Better to remain silent and give the impression of being stupid rather than speak and remove all doubt!”. …

When he was pointed out that maybe the left is clutching at straws to not recognize the government’s merit in cutting a tax, he replied: “But it depends on how you cut taxes, and to whom. That’s the issue, simple, because taxes are cut for everyone regardless of income and doing so with debt. I think tax reduction should only be done for those in difficulty and it cannot be passed on to future generations.” According to him, moreover, this will not gain support for the government: “I have a lot of faith in Italians. There will be families who get a reduction and I am glad they have it, just as others who didn’t need it and that is wrong. But Italians are not for sale, I don’t think you can recover support after four years of government with a 50 or 100 euro cut in the car tax, an amount which, by the way, is paid every additional week for gasoline.”

And again: “It is a bad view of Italians that this government has, and it is not realistic: there are those who will vote for Meloni and those who will not, but it will not be because of this. Italians are an intelligent people, they have seen many tax cuts six months before elections. And it is also the reason why politics does not enjoy the highest credit from citizens.”
