A decision that comes in the wake of protests from over 300 Florentine citizens, who had launched an appeal to Palazzo Vecchio to take the square out of neglect. Yesterday afternoon the city’s mayor, Sara Funaro, issued a statement announcing the change of course «on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the death of the Florentine journalist and writer, starting with the planting of a tree in her memory right in this green space». Funaro retraced the history of the space up to the decision to change its name and explained the initiatives related to the anniversary of the writer’s death.
«On the tenth anniversary of Oriana Fallaci’s death, an important choice was made: to name a tram stop and an adjacent area after her. Calling this space a “square” was a choice of enhancement, moreover squares are part of the city’s street system. Many years have passed, today there are new requests, which I consider right and legitimate», she said referring to the appeal to give the place greater dignity.
«For this reason, after receiving the proposal from a large group of citizens, we reviewed all the documentation, I contacted the nephew and heir Edoardo Perazzi, who said he was available and happy with this choice: hence the decision to heed the appeal, we will change the name from square to garden “Oriana Fallaci”, a transformation that also recalls the architectural and landscape value of this space, a historic garden designed by Poggi, with the possibility of a new placement of the signs, so that they are more visible and can be positioned at the entrance of the area».
