A comment on Picierno’s farewell also came from the Democratic Party group leader in the Chamber, Chiara Braga: “When someone who has been a fundamental part of the Democratic Party since its foundation decides to abandon it, it is always a regrettable thing. Picierno’s discomfort is not new. I cannot understand exactly, let alone share, the judgment given of the Democratic Party.” And again: “Today, the Democratic Party has regained centrality in the center-left field and has an identity consistent with its founding values. It seems to me that the data also show that the Democratic Party is healthy. It is a pluralistic party; the valuing and listening to sensitivities on complex issues is a hallmark of the Democratic Party.”

Picierno’s “is an individual decision, albeit a significant one, probably also linked to prospects of roles at the European level, but I would not derive from it an evaluation of the nature and identity of the Democratic Party, which seems to me to have clear objectives and a commitment to building an alternative to this right-wing government that governs Italy,” she concluded.
