The broad front talks about the need for a wealth tax in Italy but the audience is empty: this happened at the presentation of the book “Taxing Millionaires. Taking from the Rich to Give to the Poor” by journalist Riccardo Staglianò in the Berlinguer hall of Montecitorio. Guests of honor were Maria Cecilia Guerra from the PD, Chiara Appendino from the Five Star Movement, and Elisabetta Piccolotti from Avs. Moderated by Eva Giovannini. “Maybe it was a good opportunity for the left to understand that Italy does not need new taxes on savings?” this is how the FdI account commented on social media about the absence of people at the conference. In the room, only journalists and operators, no sign of deputies and senators.

And following an appeal: “The broad front should put aside the obsession with putting their hands in Italians’ pockets and instead try to support those who invest, produce, and create jobs. More pragmatism, less ideology. That way, maybe next time you will also manage to fill the room.” The three political figures invited to the event focused especially on Oxfam’s proposal: a tax concerning 0.1% of the population, that is about 50,000 people who have assets over 5.4 million euros (excluding the primary residence).
While Piccolotti and Appendino showed particular passion on the topic, the Democrat Guerra preferred more caution: “The coalition’s and individual parties’ program is under construction, it is an ongoing process.” After her, the intervention of the Five Star member and former mayor of Turin: “We are facing a reverse class struggle, from top to bottom. It is not 99% of the people fighting against the more powerful 1%, but that untouchable 1% fighting against the people, and they are winning. So let’s say it: it’s time for even the super-rich to pay the bill.” Finally, Piccolotti: “I am convinced that the wealth tax can help us win the next elections. Do you see a multimillionaire with 6, 7, 8 million euros in assets changing residence, moving to another country to avoid paying a few thousand euros? All polls are telling us that between 54 and 75% of the Italian population is in favor of the wealth tax.”
