There is no summer that holds, nor vacation that can calm the ideological frenzy of the union left. As soon as umbrellas and towels are put away, the Cgil immediately pulls out the usual script of permanent protest. The pretext to warm up the engines in view of the debate season on the latest Budget Law of the legislature is already ready: a “great national demonstration” called for Saturday, October 17 in Rome.

A fixed appointment, a sort of autumnal propitiatory rite in which the red union dusts off its support acronyms, gathered under the pompous umbrella of “La Via Maestra” together with over a hundred area associations, to start the usual campaign of delegitimization against the government led by Giorgia Meloni.
The tones, after all, are the same as always: apocalyptic, catastrophic, aimed at a call to arms against a phantom “authoritarian twist.” Listening to the statements issued by the union assembly, it seems like being on the margins of a regime rather than in a full parliamentary democracy. For Landini and his vast network of allies, in fact, every measure approved by the center-right majority elected by the citizens is an “attack on democracy.”

The reform of Differentiated Autonomy? A “definitive split of the country.” The Premiership? The “archiving of the parliamentary Republic.” The Nordio law on Justice? The “cancellation of the independence of the judiciary.” In short, according to the Cgil, if the government reforms and modernizes state institutions following the program with which it won the elections, it is committing a crime of constitutional lèse-majesté.
So the square on October 17 becomes the usual reheated soup in which everything is put inside, as long as it serves to make numbers and controversy. It goes from the unwavering defense of the Constitution, which for the union must be an untouchable fetish only when the center-right is in government, to pacifist claims in a pauperist sauce, with the inevitable no to the “conversion to a war economy.” And again: the demand for a “truly progressive” tax system (translated into Italian: new taxes and wealth taxes for those who produce wealth and offer work), indiscriminate public welfare, and radical environmental battles on the “environmental reconversion” of production systems, the same ideological recipes that throughout Europe are bringing factories and manufacturing to their knees.

While the executive works to find concrete resources in view of the maneuver, trying to support the lowest incomes and defend the purchasing power of families, the Cgil prefers the shortcut of the square to impose its political agenda. The real issues of ordinary people, from wages to inflation, from the cost of living to job stability, are as usual instrumentalized to raise ideological dust. The script is all too clear: no substantive confrontation at institutional tables, but total attention to stirring up the squares to block the reform season and barricade themselves in past positions.
With the call to vote and to the squares for October, Landini confirms the true nature of his mandate: no longer a union that pragmatically protects workers, but the main political opposition force in the country, ready to act as a support and fuel for the left in Parliament.
