Voltaire was not wrong to say that “the living deserve respect, the dead only the truth.” And who knows if Emma Bonino herself would have appreciated the excessive praise mixed with the syrup of rhetoric. Nonconformist but always tied to power, and this too has been written. And since today there is a woman in power, the first woman at Palazzo Chigi and who comes from the right, they could not resist the temptation to read Emma Bonino’s political career as the one that anticipated Giorgia Meloni’s successes. Emma before Giorgia, but then even before there was Nilde one could object and even earlier the founding mothers. In an endless chain that would have the sole purpose, if displayed, of minimizing the historic event of a first woman prime minister in Italy.
THE TEMPTATION
In short, the temptation (article by Flavia Perina in La Stampa) was to give the prize to the woman who would have broken the glass ceiling first to Emma, not to Giorgia. Emma who ran her campaign for the Quirinale with a provocative poster: “Emma, finally the right man.” Only en passant do we recall the controversy over the fact that Giorgia Meloni calls herself “il” president causing offense to the feminist vocabulary according to the neo-suffragettes guarding properly oriented language, while for that poster Emma is forgiven what is blamed on Meloni at every turn. But after all Emma, like Giorgia, believed that gender quotas were a big nonsense, a detail that for some reason disappeared from the eulogies in her memory. Still, it was also her battle against women treated as “Indian reserves.”
Exactly what Giorgia also thinks, and what a former MSI member like the mayor of Lecce Adriana Poli Bortone thinks, who wanted to dedicate a memory to Bonino focused on the common fight against quotas and for the prevalence of merit. Returning to that campaign for the Quirinale: there were also many signatures from the right to support Emma, including those of Franco Cardini and Vittorio Feltri, Indro Montanelli and Eugenia Roccella. It was 1999.
But Emma got 15 votes. Francesco Rutelli, in an interview with Corriere, states that if the president of the Republic had been elected by direct vote the game for Bonino would have been different, perhaps even winning. Yet the highest votes won by the list bearing her name was 8.5% in the European elections (also in 1999). This to say how much the people were willing to follow her.
OFF WITH THE HALO
So let’s remove the halo that she herself would not have wanted, especially if it is placed on Bonino’s head to make her a sort of anti-Meloni. We already have the talkative Alessandra Moretti who says that Meloni should take lessons from Bonino on rights. What to say: the left should go there too then. For the staunch defense of Israel, for the timely denunciation of the female condition under Islamic regimes so neglected today by progressive women, for having recognized the right to use force against neutralist pacifism. Either the halo is valid for the whole Bonino or better to remove it.
After September 11 Bonino warned against the danger of Islamist fundamentalism. Oriana Fallaci did too. The right forgave the latter for being pro-abortion. Not Bonino. Paradoxically, she is also blamed for the family crisis due to divorce. Yet on abortion and divorce there were referendums that gave a clear response. One thing politics has not understood: if you moralize to Italians they rebel and moralize the politicians. And then it is not known who ends up first behind the blackboard. Better to leave it alone.
