Zona Bianca, a current affairs and in-depth program hosted by Giuseppe Brindisi on Rete 4, featured Matteo Ricci, MEP for the Democratic Party. On the table was the issue of the No Tav guerrilla and the clash between the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, and the PD secretary, Elly Schlein.
Ricci states: “First of all, I say that the Turin-Lyon line must be done, because we need to move people and goods by rail and reduce and avoid CO2 emissions into the atmosphere; that is a fundamental infrastructure. We will face the problem in Europe in the coming years of financing other infrastructures like that if we want to have a modern and fast rail transport. Second, those violent people are criminals and have nothing to do with those who protest peacefully. From the initial investigations, it seems to me that the violent people are not from the valleys; they are often people coming from outside, and I want to say this unequivocally. The violent, the violent extremists, are the best allies of the reaction, of the reactionaries. This is the culture of the left in our country, nothing like the things we have heard said in a despicable way these days by some government representatives. They should reread the country’s history and what the left, the unions, have done to distance violence and extremism.”
Ricci then shifts focus to the State apparatus: “Can you explain to me why we manage to do, as services, I mean the secret services of our country, prevention and respect to the arrest of violent people who do not enter stadiums or violent people close to terrorism, and we cannot do it for the usual ones? Why is it always the same people who cause trouble and violence in the squares and who benefits? Why is it not done? Why? You tell me. Why is it not done? So this is a point: who should guarantee security in this territory? And I add… does it seem normal to you that every time something happens, a news event, the first to politically speculate are those in government, who should guarantee security in this country, does that seem normal to you? Meloni, for example, did well to go to that construction site to denounce that violence and to demonstrate the presence of the State. Soon it will be August 2, go to that square in Bologna where there has been a demonstration since 1980 for a massacre of fascist origin in which the government does not participate except with secondary figures.”
