Casarini, co-founder of the NGO Mediterranea, and Beppe Caccia, shipowner, were also victims of the same spyware. Cancellato reported it on January 31, 2025, almost simultaneously with an article in the British newspaper The Guardian, according to which about a hundred subjects across Europe, including Italian journalists and activists, would have fallen into the trap of the spy trojan produced by the Israeli company Paragon Solutions, founded by former Prime Minister Ehud Barak and now owned by a US fund.

DISTORTED STORY
The story of the following months was entirely focused on trying to prove that the hand behind Graphite was the Meloni government because Cancellato and colleagues had signed the Fanpage investigation on National Youth while Casarini, Caccia, and others as NGO leaders, thus pro-migrant, an area opposite to that of the conservative executive. And despite the undersecretary Alfredo Mantovano, who has the Services delegation, and the rest of the executive always clarifying that the government never spied on any journalist, it took the Copasir report, approved in the session of June 4, to have confirmation: Casarini was wiretapped, it’s true, but it was the PD and Five Star government that wanted it and this because then Prime Minister Conte authorized a control activity «aimed at preventing the threat to national security by individuals suspected of facilitating the entry of foreign subjects into the national territory». The wiretapping began in 2019 after a request «duly authorized by the general prosecutor of the Rome Court of Appeal» and ended in 2024. Asked about the matter, Casarini shrugged: «Conte spied on me and should apologize». It doesn’t seem he ever did.
