Interviewed by Repubblica on the situation of the war between Russia and Ukraine and on the management of aid to Zelensky’s people, Lia Quartapelle, PD deputy, shoots big against Giorgia Meloni, forgetting however that the prime minister has always openly sided with Kiev. The Democrat accuses the prime minister of having lost part of the leadership shown so far on the dossier: “Meloni has done one right thing in these years: supporting Ukraine. But her leadership ability on this issue is fading a lot.”

According to the deputy, the new package “arrives very late, but the mystery remains about what we are sending and there is no willingness to explain it to the Italian citizens.” And she adds: “It would be easy to do so: every day we see Ukrainian civilians dying under Russian bombs also due to the absence of interceptor missiles and adequate air defense.” Roberto Vannacci, who is against sending weapons, also ends up in Quartapelle’s sights. “He weighs a lot and Meloni tries to save both ends: she fears Vannacci and at the same time tries to help a League clearly in difficulty.” For the deputy, this way Meloni “puts internal political issues first. The decrease in support for Ukraine in public opinion goes hand in hand with less clarity about what we do and the reasons why we do it.”
Quartapelle then returns to the secrecy of the shipments: “We are talking about foundational issues for the security of our continent: more transparency is needed. Secrecy should be set aside in favor of a principle of democratic accountability.” On the “willing ones,” instead, she accuses the government of having “avoided several opportunities for joint initiative,” citing the Purl program and exercises: “We have avoided opportunities to act together with other countries, both to protect Ukraine and to deepen European cooperation on defense. The government remains torn between the idea of muscular sovereignty and the awareness that today Italian security passes through the construction of a true European security. Meloni cannot resolve this dilemma.” Finally and at last, she looks at her own house, at the PD and the divisions in the center-left. “The PD has never failed on the issue. But I do not hide the general problem: support for Ukraine should be the first issue to be addressed on the program.
