Nicola Fratoianni’s vacation at the Lido Vip in Salento has caused quite a stir on social media. The criticism of the secretary of Sinistra Italiana and deputy of Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra is predictable, almost expected: he himself, the champion of workers’ rights, the proletarian politician, indulges in the luxury of an umbrella and two sunbeds at 70 euros a day at Togo Bay Beach in Torre Lapillo?
Insults poured in, divided between many “haters” and some disappointed and bitter supporters. A wave of criticism that also forced Lady Fratoianni, Elisabetta Piccolotti, to publicly defend her partner (meaning husband, in this case).
While photos of Fratoianni in swimwear and with a drink in hand go viral online, the Avs deputy intercepted on the sidelines of a conference at the Venice Film Festival explains to Corriere della Sera, not without a hint of irritation: “He has a friend who was having a birthday and told him: ‘Come, we’re spending a day at the beach.’ There is even a post from a deputy (Augusta Montaruli of Fratelli d’Italia, ed.) convicted of embezzlement for misusing public funds, who dares to attack Fratoianni because for one day he went to the beach with a friend who was celebrating a birthday and had invited him. It seems the scandal is the 70 euros for the sunbed, which divided between the two friends is 35 euros. These prices are more or less in line with those in Salento.” And here, to be generous, the case of handsome Nicola under the umbrella could be closed. Yet, whether it’s the heatwave hitting both Puglia and the Lagoon, or a guilty conscience, the fact is that Elisabetta adds a political charge.
She replies that the controversy is “completely unfounded and without any basis. We have always fought for at least 30 percent of beaches in Italy to be free. There is no contradiction between going one day to celebrate a friend’s birthday, who invited you, and the fight for free beaches.” Then the conspiratorial jab, which frankly was not missed. “These are controversies made to try to demolish the credibility of people who fight for the common good. Because you can’t think that there are parliamentarians who fight for workers’ rights, environmental protection, a fairer tax system, and who cannot, for one day, go to the beach with a friend.” At least, the red-green deputy should be complimented for her staunch defense of her husband. When a few months ago the news of an expensive Tesla parked in the Fratoianni home garage spread amid general hilarity (and healthy surprise), the SI leader quickly shifted all responsibility to his wife: “The car is registered to her.”
The person concerned, moreover, remains silent on the specific issue, dedicating himself to broader matters: “The climate catastrophe cannot be denied, but much of politics doesn’t care, being subservient to the lobbies that have devastated the planet. We must act before it’s too late, we are here.” While waiting for structural interventions to face the sixth heatwave with peaks over 40 degrees, those who can afford it, like him, go for a dip.
