Jannik Sinner returns to the field? “October 24”: a suspicious sign | Libero Quotidiano.it

It is the sign that the wait could soon be over. Jannik Sinner, coming out of the long rehabilitation phase that forced him to a long break due to a problem with his right knee, is registered in the official entry list of the Erste Bank Open, the ATP 500 tournament scheduled from October 24. The announcement came directly from the organizers of the event who are ready to welcome with open arms the world number one called to repeat the triumph of the previous year at the Wiener Stadthalle. It would be his third title in the last three participations at the Vienna tournament (he also won in 2023), but what matters to the Italian at the moment is to regain confidence with tournaments and to savor again the taste, pleasure, and competitive effort of the competition. The first days of training on the court in Monte Carlo – where the Italian returned at the end of last week – will be decisive to understand how the joint that kept him still after the Wimbledon victory on July 12 will react. Although being on the list does not yet guarantee the mathematical certainty of participation, appearing among the participants of the Vienna tournament is at least a guarantee of the recovery process from the tendinopathy that affected him so much that he decided to give up the US Open. It was precisely from New York that the first signs arrived that could put the number 1 crown at risk. With the victory at Flushing Meadows after that at Roland Garros, Alexander Zverev becomes the number one in the race, the ranking that only takes into account the 2026 season. The South Tyrolean remains first in the ATP ranking, followed by Zverev himself and Carlos Alcaraz, but the margin has been reduced to 1,810 points.

With 5,250 still up for grabs from now until the end of the season, the advantage is therefore no longer enough to sleep peacefully. Sinner is sure to maintain the lead at least until October 18, that is until the end of the ATP 1000 in Shanghai. But from now until the end of the year, the points to defend for Jannik are many compared to those of Sasha. It will also be for this reason that the registration in Vienna (the official closing is set for September 30) was ‘filed’. The event’s field promises to be of the highest level. Sinner leads the list of participants together with top rivals such as Zverev himself, the Vienna champion in 2021.

In the list of registered players are Flavio Cobolli and Lorenzo Musetti, the crowd favorite Frances Tiafoe, as well as Learner Tien, Jakub Mensík, Brandon Nakashima, and Tommy Paul. This brings to five the number of players among the top 10 in the world and to ten among the top 20. The relationship between the Italian player and the event has deep roots as the organizers themselves recall. In 2019, the Italian arrived in Vienna as number 119 in the world thanks to a wild card; in 2020 he received a new invitation from the tournament director, Herwig Straka. From there the climb to success. Fans will well remember his most recent triumph: in last year’s final, Sinner defeated Zverev himself in three exciting and very high-level sets. “Vienna is a very special tournament for me, and I also really like the city. Here people have always taken care of me. If I had to play a tournament this week, it would be in Vienna,” he said on that occasion. Austria is therefore in Jannik’s heart to start again in a historic moment for world tennis: this week for the first time since 2002, none of Federer, Nadal, or Djokovic is among the top 10 in the ranking.
