Interviewed by Messaggero, the former Minister of Justice and current mayor of Benevento, Clemente Mastella, launches shadowy attacks on the left ahead of the upcoming elections, especially due to the ongoing skirmishes between Pd and M5s: “The center-left did indeed delude itself that the troublemakers were only on the right and in fact has been rooting for Vannacci for months. I, on the other hand, have always said that troublemakers would also emerge on the left. And we must wait for the court’s judgment regarding the M5s brand. If the symbol is returned to Grillo, Beppe returns, forms his own party with 4 percent with Di Battista and Appendino, and this party takes votes away from the alliance between Schlein and Conte, causing trouble for it.”
Mastella then continues his not-so-optimistic analysis of the opposition coalition: “In that political electoral field, I see several difficulties. The left is destined to lose if it appears with the faded photo of Naples; if it insists on vetoes against Renzi’s center and others, including mine. I just tell you that in Benevento the local Pd openly voted with the right against me; if it develops a contradictory program starting from foreign policy. In which I advise them to follow the Milky Way of President Mattarella, just as they must stop, on security, winking at the bourgeois kids who assault the police.”

Grillo’s party and the grillino nostalgia represent, in my view, a threat to be contained immediately. The Pd cannot fail to grasp the danger of this possible novelty and do everything so that Conte does not weaken. If Conte’s party struggles, this difficulty spreads to the entire coalition and does not bring it to government.”

The difference between Italy and France and between Italy and Germany is always underestimated. In France, there is Marine Le Pen. In Germany, there is AfD. These are two countries where there is no competition on the right. In our country, on the contrary, this competition definitely exists: we have a right-wing matryoshka where the Lega has its support, despite the political crisis the Salvini party is going through, and where Fratelli d’Italia may have a small fall, but will remain standing thanks to the strength of support that Meloni still retains.”
