And this vigilance over what Giorgia Meloni says from the left has never waned. They never relax. She says something banal about fascism: if you are in the middle of it, you experience things in one way, for a historical judgment you need perspective, distance in time. And immediately the usual spiel in full wokist sauce starts: the past is all wrong.

And again: how can Conte say that wokism must be overcome when the secretary of the PD is a convinced advocate of intersectional feminism? Doesn’t Conte know that Elly’s “they didn’t see us coming” is the title of a book by a feminist activist, Lisa Levenstein, according to whom it is necessary to establish an anti-racist and anti-homophobic movement for rights led by women of color, lesbians, from the Global South? Today Conte pretends to listen to those who accuse the left of preferring gender fluid bathrooms over struggles for workers, but Schlein goes straight on her path and looks to the new horizons that Chiara Valerio indicated to the left by praising Monique Wittig, author of the book The Lesbian Body. But who is Monique Wittig? A French feminist protagonist of a very transgressive, anti-militarist and anti-masculinist act: she laid a wreath under the Arc de Triomphe, “in honor of someone even more unknown than the Unknown Soldier: his wife.”
“For Wittig – wrote Chiara Valerio – lesbianism is not only a sexual orientation but a political practice. Wittig works on pronouns, seeks the disappearance of genders, writes impersonally, dismantles grammatical genders to try to undermine gender cages in society.” Well, while Conte was looking the other way, these dismantling practices, this woke neo-epistemology, took over university language and schools, with asterisks and alias careers.
Where was Conte when La Stampa praised the Cavour high school in Turin which inaugurated the term student* with an asterisk, banning males and females in the name of inclusivity? And where was he when the University of Trento demanded to use only feminine terms thanks to a specific regulation that favored a single gender, the one discriminated against by history? And finally where was he after the further battle to cancel gender distinctions – following the imposition of parent 1 and parent 2 – supported by the PD for single electoral lists: woe to dividing voters between males and females.
An obsolete practice. Could Conte have been distracted? Certainly. Now it’s a bit late to take action.
All these retreats on the left have the sour taste of electoral convenience. Like the good Stefano Fassina who wants to recover the value of the nation – he wrote about it yesterday in Il Fatto after years in which the left has ranted against sovereigntism and even reproached Meloni for quoting Ernest Renan (a racist cultural reference according to Fratoianni, remember?).
In short, we are not naive: woke is your thing and it has caused incalculable damage. Just as internationalism is your thing, the idea that borders do not exist and are “fascist” stuff. Keep this arsenal tight or, if you want to throw it overboard, at least do it in dignified silence, secretly, without confessing the fear that a 1968 slogan will come true with a significant variant, not a laugh but a schwa will bury you.
