Prime Minister Meloni immediately responded in a conciliatory manner to the attack: «I understand the dissent, I perfectly understand the reasons of those who, here in Taranto, express their dissent, and I guarantee that on the former Ilva the government is doing and will continue to do everything in its power.» Leaving the stadium she added: «We do not give up believing in a future of development, work, and sustainability for this city. Because Taranto is not just Ilva. It is an extraordinary city, with enormous potential, linked to history, culture, its beauty, and its people.»
The booers immediately responded: «The boos and jeers we reserved for her are not the result of dissent so that she does something to save Ilva, but because we want Ilva closed.» And fanning the flames yesterday was Giuseppe Conte who made it a national issue, attributing the boos to the high cost of living, gasoline, and even Del Mastro. Until Commissioner Ferrarese intervened directly: «I cannot hide my regret for the protest directed at the Prime Minister by a part, albeit limited, of the audience. Seeing contested precisely the one who wanted and decisively supported all this seemed unfair and paradoxical to me.»
