If he was, as is right, prepared the speech, a five-hour rally reading the notes. And when the going got tough, in the final 120 minutes, with the commissioners’ questions, Giuseppe Conte changed screen, from the prepared papers to the phone. The questions were asked in blocks and the answers came to the M5S leader directly on the cell phone, from some official who followed the session online, as we did. This was understood from the movements of the former premier and the back-and-forth with parliamentary colleagues, in which the questioned man floundered and his tone lost confidence. Especially when he was asked about the hundred Russians, including only about thirty healthcare workers, to whom, after a phone call with Vladimir Putin, Giuseppi opened the country’s doors in the middle of the pandemic. Conte was expected in the Covid Commission essentially to answer two accusations. The first was having initially underestimated the virus, only to then rush to impose the strictest restrictions in the world, without however managing to safeguard Italy, which in Western Europe had the most deaths of all, considering the percentage ratio between deaths and population.

Also blamed for not having updated the pandemic plan, almost twenty years old. The second for having wasted a lot of money, with the largest public contract in Italian history, one billion two hundred million, for almost useless masks, wheeled desks, Primule for (not) vaccinating, wild closures and other amenities. He did none of this. All the former premier’s dialectical effort was divided between the commitment to self-celebrate and the effort to shift all responsibility onto others. The first was consumed with an abuse of quotes, from Martin Luther King to Alcide De Gasperi, even trying to recruit Silvio Berlusconi. The second saw the World Health Organization, government colleagues, the Regions, the rest of the world and even the opposition being brought into play. But above all, Mario Draghi, whom he did not forgive for having replaced him and to whom he reproaches for “having said nonsense never uttered by me.” The sole objective: to return to where he was in January 2021, when he was deposed. To drag it out, he performed a long chronicle description of events known to all.

Giuseppe Conte, the embarrassment of a disabled former premier

Now it is clear why Giuseppe Conte took months to decide to appear before the parliamentary Commission…

Conte boasted of having kept the people united, told of his infamous night DPCMs as the highest example of emergency democracy, boasted of having created a model of virus fight that inspired other States, claimed credit for breaking the eurobond wall. He even compared the Recovery Fund to the Maastricht pact and justified his narcissistic presence with the need to reassure citizens. Essentially, he described himself as a statesman, a sort of founding father of the European Union, capable of lining up all member States behind Italy and changing the nature of the alliance. To do this, he did not disdain producing grandiose nonsense, such as boasting of having protected the economy, which instead had the steepest decline in all the West, and is the only one that has not yet fully recovered from the effects of the pandemic. The message is clear: I was the best but they got rid of me with the pretext of the vaccination campaign that was not starting because I had to make way for the government of the best, who were not better, on the contrary; and Giuseppi never misses an opportunity to reaffirm it.

The former premier was credible only in three passages: when he said he had done his best, when he claimed not to have committed crimes, and when he admitted that, in the climate of total uncertainty, it was difficult to understand anything, implying that for large stretches he understood little or nothing. Only that the Commission was not contesting his commitment, but the poor results, which the greater the commitment, the more certify the inadequacy of those who strive.
No one then thinks that Conte is a criminal under criminal law, but the defense that the people’s lawyer failed was that he committed political crimes. Finally, uncertainty is understandable, but overconfidence and centralization in moments of uncertainty are not excusable, and this is the real reason why the left, and not Giorgia Meloni, whom Giuseppi attacked directly, took the chair from under him.

“We will see each other again in September to clarify many things,” threatens the Fdi group leader, Galeazzo Bignami, collecting Conte’s willingness to appear again also in October, November… And we hope that after the holidays we will witness a different show, because yesterday’s was a performance in which each actor recited his script without exchanging lines with the other. Giuseppi pins the management of Covid on his chest like a medal, Fdi throws it at him like a stone. The reality is that the outbreak of the pandemic was a disaster for the entire planet, except for our former premier, who otherwise would have fallen before January 2021 and would not have benefited from the media spotlight that the virus gave him and that still keeps him politically alive.
