Now it is clear why Giuseppe Conte took months to decide to appear before the Parliamentary Commission investigating the Covid disaster. And the reason is simple: the prime minister who managed the pandemic has neither the means nor the cards to defend his government’s actions against accusations of delays, mistakes, and waste of public money that emerged during the many hearings. For three hours Conte tried to wear down the commissioners’ resistance with a plea worthy of a courtroom prince in which he claimed (regardless of the fact that Italy was the country with the most deaths and the most freedom restrictions among Western countries) to have managed the pandemic emergency impeccably and that without him we would probably all be dead.

Then he went on to accuse, it is unclear on what grounds, the current government and Giorgia Meloni (at the time all three parties now in the majority were in opposition) of various misdeeds and finally outdid himself with a surprise announcement: an anonymous letter in his possession claiming that the masks from the contract he rejected, which cost the government a two hundred million fine (recently settled by Palazzo Chigi for one hundred), were fake. Too bad this is a thesis that the Rome court dismissed without a doubt with a ruling in July 2025.
Self-praise, anonymous letters that appear from who knows what trash bin years later: to rehabilitate himself it would have been enough to say something like “yes, we were unprepared, we made many mistakes and it is likely that someone took advantage of it, I couldn’t do more” to rehabilitate himself in the eyes of Italians and earn applause. He didn’t do it, he remains a disabled former prime minister.
