The Meloni parliamentarian points the finger at the management of the pandemic emergency and, in particular, at the issue of mask supplies from China, which ended up at the center of the work of the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry on Covid. For Bignami, what is emerging represents an increasingly alarming picture: “What is coming out about the large order of Chinese masks is a descent into a black hole. The more you dig, the more disturbing elements emerge, the latest being the huge profits due to ‘inflated’ costs.”
According to the FdI group leader, the Commission’s activity continues to bring to light new controversial aspects. “It is an incredible story, the more you dig, the more disturbing elements come out,” he reiterates, arguing that every investigation ends up opening further questions. Hence the reference to a sort of “matryoshka,” with new chapters emerging as documents and testimonies are examined.

Bignami also links the issue of health supplies to broader questions, which also concern relations with Beijing during the most dramatic months of the pandemic. “Why do we take one billion and 251 million euros worth of fake masks from China? (…) Coincidentally, we were one of the last countries to close flights from China and the day Wuhan closes, a plane lands in Rome with more than 200 Chinese who disembark and are not subjected to tracing. Why?”, he asks.

Bignami recalls his choice to leave the Commission after the summons decided by Brothers of Italy and attacks the former Prime Minister: “As soon as I read the news agency announcing that FdI had decided to summon me, I resigned, something Conte has not done yet.” Finally, the announcement of a possible judicial initiative. “Our Constitution provides for the obligation of criminal prosecution,” Bignami emphasizes, explaining that Brothers of Italy is ready to file a complaint with the Prosecutor’s Office in light of the new elements that emerged during the work of the Covid Commission.
