Angelo Bonelli, the visionary, paves the way. And his ally Nicola Fratoianni, the pragmatic one, runs through it, entering objectively unknown territories. It may be the heat, or perhaps simple political delirium: the fact is that the two leaders of the Green Alliance and Left within 24 hours accused the government of Giorgia Meloni of being responsible for the repeated heat waves that have overwhelmed Italy this scorching summer.
Bonelli, the green, starts Monday afternoon: “To chase Vannacci, Giorgia Meloni opened a diplomatic crisis in the heart of Europe, closed Schengen with Spain, and now creates tensions also with Germany. The Prime Minister talks about everything, fuels false emergencies, and builds enemies, but carefully avoids Italy’s real problems.” And so far, one could say, simple “propaganda.” Then the sudden acceleration: “Among these is the climate crisis: extreme heat is severely affecting citizens, workers, agriculture, tourism, and the production system, causing increasingly heavy economic damage. Faced with this real emergency, the government continues to remain silent and dismantle environmental policies. Meloni should stop chasing Vannacci and start taking care of the country.”

Today Fratoianni echoes him: “Twenty-two billion: this is the price we pay every year for the extreme heat caused by the climate crisis, according to the latest investigations. Like an entire budget maneuver. Fires that devastate the country, drought that destroys crops and dries up rivers, like the higher expenses to keep air conditioners running or the productivity of workers collapsing at high temperatures. Not to mention the thousands of premature deaths due to heat waves: over 10,000 in Europe just during the last week of June,” is the account of the Avs deputy on Facebook. He then adds: “And let it be clear: at this rate the situation can only get worse. For this reason, it is increasingly urgent to put an end to climate deniers and negationists, like those who govern us. Immediate actions are needed – concludes Fratoianni – to reduce our emissions, secure people, activities, and territory from the climate crisis, and ensure that the weakest do not pay the price. Because social justice and climate justice go hand in hand or they don’t go at all. And that is what we intend to do: protect citizens and change course to prevent the worst.”
