“Containing violent people is not the left’s job,” says Pier Luigi Bersani with all the calm in the world. The former secretary of the Democratic Party, interviewed by 4 di Sera on Rete 4 after the case of the Tunisian Fakir who died in Bologna while being immobilized by two policemen and the subsequent, furious violence of the demonstrators in the square, shrugs however regarding the political responsibilities of those who, from the left, fuel the fire of anger and identify the police forces as the weak link in security.
“When the left organizes a demonstration, an extreme subversive fringe then tags along, so, why can’t the left free itself from certain presences?”, the Mediaset program’s correspondent asks him. Bersani takes it badly, very badly: “But why the left? But why the left? It’s a democracy that must keep these phenomena under control. In Bologna, we certainly always have a presence, let’s say, aggressive even in other situations, perhaps even more trivial than this. How do you contain these things? By leaving the square there? And then, of course, preventive interventions are needed, also from the police, also from security systems.”
“That is, should we, who are on the left, become policemen? – is Bersani’s counter-question – That is, what is being asked of us? Don’t spread lessons to those who don’t need to hear them. In short, security, as you can see, have four years of sermons and propaganda improved the situation? No. We are seeing attacks on the rule of law in this country without having solved the problem of security. What is the Wild West? That is, are we following the Trump model?”.
Perhaps Bersani could have listened to the words of Pasquale Griesi, secretary of the FSP State Police union, connected to the broadcast. “We have a fantastic Batman belt with all these accessories – he explains regarding the bodycams supplied to the officers -. The problem is that these accessories are not the problem. The problem is the ideological preconception against us and there is nothing else. It is the ideological preconception against us. When someone asks me, should we, who are on the left, become policemen, and Bersani is a person I particularly appreciate, I sincerely ask myself, we don’t want others to be policemen in our place. We want to be policemen ourselves, we want to be able to work serenely and today you don’t let us do that because you attack and assault us.”

“Every time we carry out a police operation, the attack against the men and women of the police forces is automatic – Griesi emphasizes again -. On any occasion, we are the State only if someone unfortunately dies in our hands, unintentionally. When, on the other hand, policemen die, 500 policemen are attacked during public order operations, the injured increase, we are no longer the State, we are nothing, no one remembers us, no one tells us ‘excuse me, you are right, perhaps we should not have accepted these criminals in our demonstrations’. Unfortunately, do you know what the real problem is? You are currently out of touch with reality, the reality that citizens live every day and that we live on our shoulders every day. You are out of touch with that reality, you cannot understand what happens on the streets and you cannot understand how a violent person in that state of agitation can be stopped.”
