Simona Angela Gallo interviewed the news director of La7, Enrico Mentana, for the program 4 di Sera, a magazine of in-depth analysis and current affairs airing every evening on Rete 4.
Mentana, a few days ago, had lashed out against the left and against the editorial line of his own broadcaster during the “Una Montagna di Libri” review in Cortina d’Ampezzo. Shocking was the phrase against the party led by Elly Schlein: “The PD has no idea of the future.” And he then added: “What reforms do they propose? None. What is the function of the Democratic Party? What is the function of the Five Star Movement? What is the function of Green-Left Alliance? What do they want to do?”.
This time he clarifies his thoughts with Gallo, who asks him: “A few days ago you attacked the opposition saying they have no political idea and clear ideas, instead on the contrary according to you what are the winning ideas of this center-right government?”. Mentana, however, is equally blunt: “There are none, I don’t believe the problem is only with the center-left, the broad field in formation. All political forces have no idea of the future, that is the problem. Why? Because in reality there is no longer any internal political debate within the forces, no programs for the future are developed.”

Mentana then explains why the right prevails today in Italy: “Alcide De Gasperi said, in one of the most quoted and least implemented phrases, ‘politicians think about the next elections, statesmen think about the next generations.’ No one thinks about what will happen in future Italy: neither the government, that is the center-right, nor the opposition, that is the center-left. Why does the right win? Because the right proposes the impulses of the present, insecurity, the response to insecurity, sovereignty, territorial integrity, national integrity against external elements. Only to then have the need to import, one way or another, hundreds of thousands of foreigners who we need for all the jobs Italians can no longer do and no longer want to do.”
