These are the traps of political communication reduced to mere communication, as if the second term were really an ancillary adjective, and not the heart of the matter. We can imagine it, the meeting of the staff of the Five Star leader Giuseppe Conte, many students of that Marshall McLuhan from Ceglie Messapica who is (was) Rocco Casalino, all understandably struggling. There is Beppe Grillo’s purist offensive (not to be underestimated), there is the wide field in tatters primarily due to the main figure’s declared Russophilia, agencies abound about the primaries, or rather about nothing. A shake-up is urgently needed, a last-ditch effort. An eye on the agenda, ready: there is this visit to the Giovanni XXIII primary school in Isernia, renovated with Pnrr funds (of which the Conte government was the beneficiary, not the creator, but never mind). It’s perfect, we can even imagine a video at the blackboard, from Lawyer to People’s Tutor, come one, come all.

Giuseppe Conte, ignorance at school: glaring spelling mistake on the blackboard

Spelling mistake for Giuseppe Conte while trying to give a “lesson” at a school in Isernia, Molise. A pu…

There is the very slight detail that this way we pour propaganda directly onto the desks, and they are not even on wheels, we catapult the instrumentalization of storytelling straight into a place that should not belong to the horizon of the exploitable, the school (elementary, or at most middle), but the enthusiasm for the reel at fingertip reach prevails. Also because the sharpest of the group jumps up: wait, we could set up the perfect contrast, pure social populism in a pocket square against the barbaric and warmongering horde of the right. No to rearmament (like that, absolutely, whether national, European, at NATO, for defense in the East, for defense in the South, to direct traffic), yes to safer schools. Apples and pears, everything and nothing, go Lawyer-Tutor, it’s your thing, a supercazzola as simple as a slogan sized for chalk, you’re in full comfort zone.

THE OPPORTUNITY
It’s a penalty kick. Giuseppi takes it almost in place, grabs the chalk, presses on the blackboard and enunciates the words. “No to rearmament, yes to safer schools.” He turns sharply, puts on the tried-and-true government charmer mask for the camera, the air of someone who in a one-minute video mixes geopolitics and teaching, Ukraine and Pnrr, war and peace. And he doesn’t realize he lost elementary grammar along the way, he doesn’t notice that dramatic “si” without an accent left on the blackboard, like an unlikely teacher in an episode film of the B-movie Italian comedy, like any sidekick of the fellow countryman Lino Banfi. The basic adverb to express any affirmation, at least in the current Italian idiom, the first brick of spoken and written discourse for any student, even the most reluctant, mercilessly disfigured, amputated of the accent, transformed live on Instagram into another word, or at most into a musical note.

The mistake underlined twice in red already in the first months of primary school, carved in a classroom of a primary school, by a political leader who flaunts the sacredness of the school institution against the profane instincts of the war industry. As happens with all (too) brilliant social ideas, the spelling stumble immediately backfires on the author, among users elbowing each other about the former prime minister “donkey” and cascading negative comments. The text accompanying the video with the blunder on the Conte pages doesn’t help either: “Look here, you can turn the page.” Yes (with the accent), maybe you can at least go to page 2 of the Italian book.
And the packaging becomes an (unintentional) masterpiece: “look here” opposite the violated spelling in plain sight, “you can turn the page” with the personal reflexive pronoun written correctly, without an accent, that is identical to the incorrectly written affirmative adverb, only much bigger. It’s a perfect picture, almost expressionist, in its rendering of such a plastic idea of non-credibility, of improvised struggle, of a poorly done copying from the desk mate (indeed). From there, everything that follows falls into irrelevance, if not into unintentional comedy. “We brought that money to defend a welfare model.” It’s hard to sermonize about the welfare model if you have elementary writing problems, if you’re not comfortable with the most used monosyllable in communication in the Italian language. And at the end of the day, in the staff busy pondering the next brilliant idea, a piercing doubt arises: maybe it was better to talk about primaries.
