Stop a Schengen with Spain for another fifteen days: this was decided by Giorgia Meloni’s government, thus extending the suspension of the agreement after the serious migratory crisis in Ceuta, the Spanish exclave in Morocco stormed by migrants at the end of July. According to what has emerged, the note with which the government is communicating to the EU the extension, for a further 15 days, of controls at the air and sea borders with Madrid is currently being notified.

The decision “was made, in line with the analysis carried out by the Committee for Immigration Analysis and Border Security, due to the persistence of the evaluation elements that were the basis for their reintroduction last August 1st, but at the same time also taking into account the initiatives already launched by Spain, together with the European Union, so that the situation in that area can move towards a near normalization“: the Interior Ministry communicated. The evaluations underlying the extension measure “were communicated by the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, to his Spanish counterpart, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, during a constructive telephone exchange”.

The extension “was necessary – explained Piantedosi -. It is a decision motivated by the fact that there is an analysis made by specialists who meet in the Border Security Analysis Committee. We limited the extension to 15 days because while the analysis made by specialists indicates that the reasons for which this measure was started persist, on the other hand it is certainly appreciable the effort that the Spanish government is making, together with the European Union, to overcome the situation that has arisen”.

The situation in Ceuta still appears out of control due to the underestimations previously made by the Spanish government – commented the President of the Senate Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, Maurizio Gasparri -. There is no doubt that the large amnesty decided by the socialist Sanchez has acted as a pull factor for illegal immigrants arriving in Ceuta. Many are unaccompanied minors, so the management must be addressed with commitment and wisdom by the Spanish authorities, but Sanchez in these weeks preferred holidays, only belatedly and with a polemical tone invoking European solidarity to which he did not conform when he decided on weak policies towards immigration. Moreover, there is always the risk of jihadist infiltrations and therefore the decision of our government to maintain a cautious attitude appears absolutely sensible.
