Bonaccini insults right-wing voters? The patch worse than the hole: "What I meant to say..." | Libero Quotidiano.it

It took just one sentence to turn an internal discussion within the PD into a national political issue. Stefano Bonaccini, speaking in Albenga, tried to explain why the left has lost ground among the working classes. But in doing so, he described support for the right as the majority among those with less education, living in the suburbs, and economically worse off. An interpretation that immediately sparked a reaction from the center-right.

The words of Bonaccini were echoed by Giorgia Meloni, who attacked the PD president on social media: “Millions of Italians vote right because they have little education,” summarized the prime minister, contesting what she called a classist view of voters. Meloni then reversed the argument: according to the prime minister, many Italians vote right not because of their educational qualifications, but because they have concretely experienced the consequences of left-wing policies, from the suburbs to security, up to border control.

Bonaccini, put under pressure by the controversy, then tried to correct his stance. In a video on social media, he claimed that the attacks from the right were meant to avoid discussing the country’s economic and social problems. “I did not want to offend anyone at all,” he explained, accusing Meloni and members of the majority of organizing a campaign against him.

Then the clarification: according to Bonaccini, that sentence was meant above all as a warning to the left, invited to “get rid of their snobbishness” and to become “more popular.” The goal, he added, should be to regain the vote of the working classes ahead of the next elections. A retreat that, however, does not erase the original sentence, which is now destined to weigh in the upcoming electoral campaign.
