RIP Abderrahim Fakir”: the Avs MEP Ilaria Salis wrote this on social media posting the video of the arrest during which a 43-year-old man of Moroccan origin lost his life. He died during a police check in Bologna. The police intervened after reports from residents, who spoke of a man in a state of severe agitation. While efforts are underway to clarify the causes of the man’s death, some are already making comments like this to attack the government.

“What we see in the video from Bologna is an extremely serious incident. It would be yet another case of a man clearly confused, asking for help and instead of receiving assistance, he is restrained by the police and it will be said that he died from positional asphyxia. I hope this is not the case, that it is not yet another case, like what happened to Riccardo Magherini or Federico Aldrovandi. A request for help is met with force,” commented the Avs senator, Ilaria Cucchi, then announcing a parliamentary inquiry into the matter.
Meanwhile, the mayor of Bologna Matteo Lepore said in a statement: “I invite you to meet tomorrow in Piazza Nettuno at 7 pm to be united and come together, to be close to the Pilastro community in such a painful moment. Let us gather to demand truth and justice for the death of Abderrahim Fakir, for a moment of remembrance and reflection, to face this tragedy united as Bologna knows how to do.”

Among others, the FdI group leader in the Chamber, Galeazzo Bignami, commented: “The death of a person is always a tragic event. We await the outcome of the necessary ongoing checks, but from what is understood, the intervention of the Police Forces, requested by citizens and to which citizens contributed, was conducted professionally and in a manner appropriate to the type of need that arose.” And further: “The presence of 118 operators throughout the containment intervention is an additional element of confirmation. I called the Bologna Police Chief to express through him my closeness to all the women and men of the Police Headquarters and especially to the two officers involved in the intervention, thanking them for the commitment they dedicate daily to protecting citizens’ safety.”
