The left loses its hair but not its vice. After the failed attempt in Turin, the comrades turn to another red stronghold: Florence. The goal is always the same: to get their hands on private property, in perfect Soviet style. The proposal comes from Avs, not coincidentally the party where Ilaria Salis is a member. And the underlying idea is as simple as it is terrifying: to register unoccupied properties. But it doesn’t end there. If the owners do not intend to put them on the market, temporary requisition will proceed to allocate them to the alleged housing emergency. A surreal proposal, which however could find the approval of the Democratic Party. The Democrats, although not fully endorsing requisition, have said they are ready to discuss the proposal, relaunching the idea of a census of vacant homes and a system of incentives and penalties to encourage owners to rent them out.

The plan is divided into three phases. First, the census of empty homes is carried out. Immediately after, a dialogue with the owners is initiated to convince them to rent them out. And if the discussion fails, temporary requisition of the property would be triggered. In that case, it would be rented to those in a housing emergency, subject to payment of a capped rent. A real expropriation. But not for the comrades, who try to pass it off as an extraordinary measure.

Hence the level of alarm from the center-right. The Brothers of Italy councilors in the Florence city council, Alessandro Draghi, Angela Sirello (group leader), Giovanni Gandolfo and Matteo Chelli speak of a proposal that winks at Ilaria Salis because it would introduce “forms of coercion, as Avs seems to propose, against legitimate owners. A sort of proletarian expropriation, incompatible with the principles of a democratic state and with the protection of private property.”

“A crazy and dangerous idea to be strongly condemned,” said the note from the Lega group leader in the Florence City Council Guglielmo Mossuto. The same goes for Forza Italia. “On the left they are now the parody of South American communist regimes – said Deborah Bergamini -, they have a deep hostility towards private property, which according to them must be taxed, requisitioned, penalized in every way. On these bases, they are preparing to build the alternative: a collective danger in which the state expropriates and crushes. A nightmare for everyone’s freedom.”
