The President of the Senate on Tuesday evening, immediately after the earthquake vote in the Chamber which saw the majority fall on the amendment to the new electoral law on preferences, took X and reminded his center-right colleagues: “I remind you – as President of the Senate – that in bicameralism there is the concrete possibility to modify, even surgically, what was voted in the Chamber. Obviously with a favorable vote which, according to the Senate rules, does not allow secret voting on the point and therefore makes the intentions of individual senators clear.”

Heavens opened. Vehement protests among the opposition, with Angelo Bonelli unleashed. “The presidency of the Chamber should remind the President of the Senate that he is not the FdI group leader and must respect the vote of the Chamber,” said the deputy of Alliance Greens Left on Tuesday evening in the Chamber. “There is another aspect that we frankly find intolerable and which the House should be aware of. Luca Pirondini, M5s group leader, attacked the majority: “On September 4 they will boast of being the longest-lasting government in history and instead you will be remembered as the most ‘bolted’ government to the chair.” At that point, his party colleagues stood up showing signs with the word “Bolted“. The PD group leader Francesco Boccia directly warned La Russa: “The Chambers are not the place where government defeats are corrected,” hoping that the president will be “the first guarantor of the autonomy of this chamber.”
“There is no secret vote in the Senate: everyone must put their face on what they vote. This means that no one can hide behind their finger,” La Russa explained on the sidelines of the screening of a documentary at Palazzo Giustiniani. “Meloni is right to consider the votes missing on a government-backed measure an important reason for reflection, it seems to me that there is an exaggeration about the vote on an amendment.”
