The Chamber floor rejected by secret ballot the amendment of the deputy of Futuro Nazionale with Vannacci Edoardo Ziello which provided for the introduction of preferences in the electoral law. The no votes were 233, the yes votes 139.

The government and the majority had left it to the floor, modifying the initially negative opinion. Democratic Party and Five Star Movement had said from the start that they were against voting for the amendment of the Vannacci group. However, evidently, as happened on Tuesday, even in the center-right majority there were those who said no. Yesterday the “snipers” were 31, many of whom – it was whispered in the Transatlantic – were women from the League and Forza Italia, although more than one suspected the same FN deputies. The Ziello amendment was read by many as a last-ditch attempt to save the majority in a corner. Attempt rejected, despite apparently the orientation of Brothers of Italy being to support the proposed amendment.
The move by Futuro Nazionale had for a few minutes unsettled the center-left. The Democratic deputy Federico Fornaro had taken the floor at Montecitorio: “We will not vote for any amendment presented by Futuro Nazionale neither on this nor on future measures, we will not vote for them today nor ever”. Immediately came the response from Ziello: “This statement for us is a gold medal“.
Same position from the Five Star Movement. “We cannot betray Giorgia Meloni, because she has never had our trust. In our voting declarations we explained that we could not vote for a fake amendment – jokes the leader Giuseppe Conte -. Brothers of Italy are making a big fuss, a racket saying that they wanted preferences, but on this they immediately suffered a defeat. Not a defeat of the voters, let’s make that clear. Meloni put her face on it and said ‘I want preferences’, but that amendment provided for pre-printed names with locked top lists. These are not preferences because as our amendment, which was rejected, provided, voters must be free to write the name of the candidate. Giorgia Meloni invented the usual trick to fool the Italians”. The Movement, explains on L’aria che tira on La7, will not vote for the amendment “because it is not acceptable in an unacceptable context. It is a game between Fn and the majority, let them play it among themselves”.
Roberto Vannacci, whose men were accused yesterday of having “betrayed” the center-right, today responded from Civitanova Marche: “Yesterday it happened that the Badoglians of the center-right shot in the back of their own side, with the ammunition that was provided to them by the Democratic Party which requested the secret vote”. From the vote in the Chamber “a reality emerged: no one wants these preferences”. “Politics – he added – is afraid of popular sovereignty, afraid that citizens choose their own representatives”. But for Vannacci “the game is not lost”. “Today – he explained – the amendment of Futuro Nazionale is voted on, which proposes preferences without locked top lists. And so I say to Meloni what I have already said: show some guts, go to Parliament, call the group leaders and let’s approve this law on preference that finally restores dignity to Parliament”. Vannacci also targeted the opposition: “in my opinion the cemetery has shown that it does not want preferences”, he said playing on the reference to the broad field.
