In Rome, more or less, there are almost 18 thousand families waiting and hoping on the list to get a public housing unit. And who knows if they will ever get it. Then there are the friends of the PD who run the city, that center-social galaxy made up of immigrants and even Italians who for years have not paid a cent into the municipal coffers as tenants of the former black hole of Spin Time, always pampered by VIPs and little red VIPs but fortunately cleared out at the end of July after a fire caused by one of the usual DIY connections. Well, these gentlemen not only practically immediately received temporary housing but the allocation machine has already started moving. So much so that some families have taken possession of the properties reserved for those with low incomes. And here is the catch: first the squatters before the decent citizens?

The directors of Spin Time are over the moon and yesterday, in a meeting to prepare for the two-day event on Saturday (march) and Sunday (assembly), they even relaunched the idea of taking back the old building.
They are insatiable. Or maybe they need that place to continue doing black market business, between DJ sets, restaurant, and bar? “We find ourselves here, convinced and hopeful, about the possibility of re-entering this building, in dialogue with the institutions so that the purchase process can be completed. But the battle for this building, beyond the right to housing, also includes the right to the city,” explained the activists. Alongside them are Cgil, the No Kings network, the La Strada social center, and other small groups. However, the red galaxy is not united.
The Arci clubs, while “solidarity with the evicted people, with the struggles for the right to housing and with the dispute for the re-publicization of the Santa Croce in Gerusalemme building,” have announced that tomorrow and the day after they will not demonstrate for Spin Time. The reason? Rome, they say, “is not all contained in one dispute” because “it is in the battles against speculation and against the privatization of public space, in the struggles for housing, in Santa Palomba against the incinerator, in Casal Selce and Cesano against the biodigesters, in Pietralata and Fiumicino against useless large works, at the former Mercati Generali against luxury dormitories.” Sharp shots at the Gualtieri administration, which the Spin people cannot afford for two reasons: both because the mayor has provided everyone with new homes, and because it would mean losing any chance, if there still were any, of regaining possession of the property occupied from 2013 to today. The message from the Arci clubs is clear: “You cannot think only of yourselves.”

At the moment – this is a partial figure, since forecasts could even reach a full three million euros -, Rome Capital has already spent over half a million euros on hotel rooms, rooms in parishes, and nursing homes intended for the squatters. In the Transparency Commission it also emerged that 289 people were registered as residents in the occupied building, 140 of whom since 2014, that is almost from day one. Meanwhile, the city is preparing for Saturday. The antagonist serpent will start at 2 pm from Piazza della Repubblica heading towards Piazza Vittoria. The alert on the public order front is high, considering the actors involved, starting with the violent ones from the Lambretta social center in Milan (regularized in their time by the PD administration of Beppe Sala). Arm in arm with this uncontrollable magma are also various sections of Anpi partisans and even the Roman sections of the Green Left Alliance and Young Democrats. Will the now former illegal tenants of Spin Time stay comfortable in their new homes or continue to be revolutionaries on the street?
