For months the progressive front has discussed rules without having clearly decided who will play, with what scheme, and possibly to pursue some program. The coalition that should present itself as the alternative to the Meloni government seems like a condominium meeting where they argue about choosing the president before even knowing if the building has a roof.
The most painful point, however, is not even the brawl over the primaries. The question that Gruber puts black on white: what is the idea of society of Schlein and company? What are the strong proposals? How do you hold together Europeanism with pacifism, common defense with permanent distinctions, Conte with Schlein, Schlein with the reformists, the reformists with those who wink at Islamic fundamentalism? Simple questions, so simple that for four years no one has been able to answer.

Of course, Gruber remains Gruber and when she shifts attention to Meloni she returns to wielding the usual arsenal: «very thin» government, electoral alchemies, Vannacci, Schengen, security, economy. Nothing surprising. In fact, this makes the previous part more significant. Because if such a severe voice with the center-right feels the need to tell the center-left that it is wasting time, it means the problem can no longer be hidden behind the usual anti-Meloni stance. And indeed comes the sting that hurts the most: after four years of «right-right» government, PD and Five Star Movement are roughly stuck at the same percentages. They do not grow.

They don’t break through. They don’t capitalize. Listening to certain talk shows, Meloni would be besieged by an imminent revolt within her own camp; then you look at the numbers and realize the siege has few soldiers and many commentators. Gruber asks Elly and Giuseppi if they have wondered why. A question almost cruel in its banality. Maybe because the «no to Meloni» is not enough to make a program.
Maybe because voters want to know how they will handle the accounts to fix wages, taxes, security, school, health, energy, and foreign policy. Maybe because a coalition is not born by adding incompatible labels and hoping that arithmetic does the work of politics.
The novelty is not that the center-left is confused: even Mars can see that. That the short circuit is becoming evident even in that small media circle that for years has turned every stumble of the majority into an apocalypse and every void of the opposition into a communication problem. Now, however, even its most indulgent observers begin to admit the truths. When even Gruber gets tired of the left, maybe it’s time for the left to start imagining how much it has tired its voters.
