It turns out that only the so-called reformists, that is the minority, and evidently Elly Schlein, are in favor. The message from the Democratic Party headquarters is clear: “The secretary’s line does not change by a comma. The prime minister candidate of the Broad Field will be decided by the primaries or will be the one from the party that gets one more vote in the elections.”

The leader – reports Il Corriere della Sera – is indeed fully aware of the encirclement attempts by the old Dem foxes, led by the group of the (renamed) ‘Contiani Dem’, including former ministers of Conte II. Speranza and Dario Franceschini, it is slyly observed within the party, “are clearly among them.” The goal? To find a third man (Gaetano Manfredi, mayor of Naples) or the third woman (Silvia Salis, from Genoa), to try to avoid the primaries.

And so Arturo Parisi, inventor of the primaries, explains what is happening: “I don’t know if they are friends or opponents of Conte. But between Franceschini and Speranza and other faction leaders, the race to wear down Elly Schlein continues. Their ‘no’ to the primaries strengthens and spreads the idea that she can only lose them.” As for the other protagonist of the broad field, the Five Star Movement, the line is clear: “Primaries without ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’, there are no alternatives.”
