The primaries for the premier candidate “are a political mistake and should be avoided. We are slipping into them without having fully thought through the meaning and the political and electoral consequences.” Roberto Speranza has no doubts. The former Health Minister, interviewed by Corriere della Sera, seemed skeptical about the possibility of democratically selecting the premier candidate of the broad field before the next political elections. According to him, the primaries for the broad field would be a “spectacular own goal.” The reason? He risks losing the elections.
So what to do? Another foreign Pope? Almost. Speranza has a sui generis solution: a figurehead. For the former minister, the only way to overcome the obligation to indicate the premier on the ballot would be “to make a symbolic choice, like a new eighteen-year-old or an elderly partisan.” Therefore, the Silvia Salis option is excluded: “I see neither the timing nor the space and I consider it entirely legitimate that the leaders of the main parties aspire to lead our alternative project. But the real moment of competition can only be the elections, in which each party and each leadership can measure their proposal on the electoral level. With the model I propose, no political force would pay the price of a defeat in the primaries.”
