Alan Friedman, interviewed on L’aria che tira about the current geopolitical situation, let himself go in a rather raw analysis. The American journalist initially focused on the Russo-Ukrainian conflict and the current position of Vladimir Putin. “If there were real polls, Putin would be like Trump in America with 70% against him. Maybe half because Putin has been in power for 27 years and so there are entire generations that have grown up with the brainwashing of propaganda.”
“I believe – he continues – that we must remember history. History teaches us since the time of the tsars that when a Russian leader loses a war or finds himself in a quagmire during an invasion of another country, historically that leader is removed through a coup. He generally dies or is replaced and imprisoned. So Putin is playing his life, he is going all in here. The problem is that Putin has a disastrous economy and without China’s support he is in trouble.”

Then on Trump: “On the other hand Trump doesn’t give a dime to Ukraine. And Trump is often subservient to Putin, he sides more with Putin than with Zelensky. Trump hates the European Union and wants a world where the strong make invasions, conquer, steal oil. Trump is an outlaw and Putin is happy about this.”

Finally, Friedman tries to predict what will happen on the battlefield: “The war, in my opinion, will continue beyond the midterm elections in November. Just as the war in Iran will not be resolved by Trump by November. And this is important because it means more deaths, more suffering, more threats to the global economy. But also the defeat of Trump in November and then a new Washington from next January.”
