Waiting for September to untie the knots that can no longer be postponed – starting with whether or not to hold primaries – the center-left leaders will undergo an “athletic” preparation ahead of the real race. The occasion will be the various party festivals, particularly those of l’Unità, which will mark August and the first half of September. Everyone will be there: from Elly Schlein to Giuseppe Conte, from Matteo Renzi to Silvia Salis, including Angelo Bonelli, Nicola Fratoianni and down through the second and third ranks.

THE TESTS
They will be a test from various points of view. First of all, for the invitations (and non-invitations), as well as for the pairings in the debates. For example, it is still not known whether Matteo Renzi will be invited to the national l’Unità festival in Reggio Emilia. So far, Raffaella Paita and Maria Elena Boschi have been booked from Nazareno. But for the leader of Italia Viva, it is still being evaluated. Formally, in fact, it has not yet been decided whether to include him in the alliance or not. For Schlein, there would be no problems, but Conte has always postponed the answer until the moment the fateful program would be defined (first we define the proposals, then the travel companions, he has always replied). The fact is that the proposals have become something mythological. They were supposed to be defined at the events in Naples and Padua. We know how it went in Naples; the Padua event was actually canceled. So, we wait for September.
Renzi, Salis and Ruffini: the war of books begins
The showdown at the center of the center-left will be fought with books. At the resumption, after the summer break,…
Then there will be the applause test: how will Conte be received? And Renzi? Will the militants show more affection to the former prime minister or to the current secretary, or equally or more to the latter? Details, but significant of a climate. Meanwhile, the leaders’ agenda is starting to fill up. The most important date so far is Tuesday, September 8, when, at 7:30 pm at the Città dell’Altra Economia in Rome, for the Avs Festival, Bonelli, Fratoianni, Schlein and Conte will face off. Title of the debate: “Ideas first,” always following the theory mentioned above (we talk about issues, then we will see the rest later). Two days earlier, however, there will be a kind of dress rehearsal because the opposition leaders – in an expanded format – are expected on September 6 at the Ambrosetti Forum in Cernobbio for the meeting “Agenda for Italy.” In addition to Schlein and Conte, Renzi and Carlo Calenda will also be there. But before that, there are the l’Unità festivals. The national one is scheduled in Reggio Emilia from September 1 to 13. All the center-left leaders should be there, but strictly in separate debates. The program is still being defined. The only certainty, for now, is the closing entrusted to the secretary, as tradition dictates.

The patch is worse than the hole… Faced with a glaring blunder, the Democratic Party even manages to make it worse…
THE CALENDAR
Between the end of August and the first half of September, however, there will be other important festivals. The one in Bologna (from August 27 to September 20), where Renzi has been invited, but not Calenda. In Borgo Panigale, where the secretary is expected. In Modena, instead, the festival will be from August 20 to September 13. The dominant figure will be the party president, Stefano Bonaccini, native of the area. On stage, among others, will be Pier Luigi Bersani, Massimo D’Alema, Marco Tarquinio, Franco Gabrielli and especially Salis, mayor of Genoa, seen by many as a possible leader of the reformist area or even more. And if in Modena she will be a guest – it will be interesting to see how she is received in the red Emilia – in Genoa she will be the hostess (even though Salis does not have a PD membership card). And in the Ligurian capital, she will meet with Schlein, already scheduled at the l’Unità festival in Genoa. The Democratic secretary should then close the l’Unità festival in Puglia in Martina Franca on September 6. An appointment that promises to be important because it will follow by two days the arrival in Bari of Giorgia Meloni, who on September 4 will celebrate in Puglia the milestone of the longest-lasting government in the republican history.
